  • School Vacation Is Coming! What To Do??

School vacation is right around the corner. The kids are excited! Are you?? Try having them brainstorm and make a list of fun activities they’d like to do over the vacation, both on sunny and rainy days. Have the kids prioritize the activities, plan dates and put the list on the frig. Anticipation is half of the fun. When the activities are done, have the kids rate them from 1-10. Perhaps you can buddy up with other parents or nannies to share group activities and outings that work around everyone’s work schedules. A planned vacation is a happy vacation for everyone.

  • Walking Your Baby Back Home Without a Phone!

While you are walking with your baby in a stroller take advantage of this one-on-one time to communicate with your little one. As the two of you face each other your baby is looking, listening and learning from you. Seeing you smile and talking about what you are seeing together on your walk is a great alternative to your child watching you, distracted, talking or texting on your phone.

That is right on, Sue and it also helps in developing the brain in the early years. We used to have baby equipment where the baby faced the Mom or Dad, etc.

Thanks, Suzane. I used to be so sad to see so many mothers fixated on their phones instead of their kids.

  • Let’s Get Creative!

Want to get your kids interested in something besides their devices? Find what else excites them. Do they bring home art work from school? Do they like to build with Legos or love to play outside? Give your kids the tools to turn on their creative juices. Then spend time with them as they start to draw, build or play.

Watch how fast your young ones will shut down their devices to spend one-on-one time with you. Your time is their favorite past time.

  • Trust Your Gut!

There are so many “how to” books about parenting that it is no wonder that sometimes new moms feel inadequate and worry if they are making the right decisions on how to care for their bundles of joy. After my first baby was born my mom stayed with me for a week to help out. When she drove out of the driveway to return home I was overwhelmed with emotions (Darn those raging hormones!!) Would I know what to do when the baby wouldn’t stop crying? Can I do t his on my own? But like most mothers I didn’t have a choice. I had to trust my gut. And, to my amazement, that’s all I needed. Just Like it did for me, your “mommy gut” will whisper to you what you need to do. Just be sure to listen. Trust your gut and you’ll be fine!

  • Put Away Your Device! It’s a Beautiful World Out There!

When I picked up my nanny kids from school every afternoon the first thing they would do is take out their devices and start scrolling. It could be a lovely sunny day, but their heads were bent down oblivious to the beautiful world outside the car windows. It was so sad! They were missing so much.

I decided that since I only had them completely to myself during that fifteen-minute ride home I’d take advantage of it. If it was springtime I’d point out the flowering trees and tell them their names. They learned about the magnificent magnolia on Main Street, enjoyed the daffodils and tulips in people’s yards and the lovely soft pink wild cherry trees in the woods. In the fall and winter we had fun discovering how the trees and flowers had changed and new things to look for.

I made sure each child had time to tell me about their day in school. I learned about their friends, what happened at recess, and what problems they were having in the classroom. I found out important things that might have been forgotten by the time they got home and were distracted. The children and I got to know each other very well during that ride.

It’s easy to make the dinner table a “no phone zone”. But you are up close and personal in the car with the family. Take advantage of it. Turn the radio off, put down the devices and talk to each other. Sing a song together. Tell jokes. Play the “I Spy” game”. You’ll love it and the kids will build precious memories of their special time with you.
